Rating System
Here is how the rating system for my blog TokiDoki works. As you will notice the rating depends much on the preference of genres. A example of why this is so is that a person will not enjoy a series if its genre is not within him or her interests as compared to a series of the same quality that is the persons favorite genre.
Must See: A series that is given this rating means that it is not only top of its range within its genre but also it is very popular. This means that the series will appeal to the general public. Therefore it is quite safe to say that if you try this series you will most likely be satisfied. Serials with the rating Must See holds the exception to the genre factor. This means that even if you don’t have a familiar interest in the genre you may come to like it after watching the series. Often a Must See series will have something unique that makes it stand out from the rest, or on another note it may be a classic. A classic is a series which has had great popularity and success in the past and may have been the foundation to genres in its future. Therefore a “classic” series may be given this rating despite a lack in quality of animation, sound, effects or any other disadvantage created by a technological reason.
Recommended: When I recommend a series it means that although the series is very good within its genre it doesn’t appeal to the general public. By that I mean unlike a Must See series the enjoyment of this series will depend a little on if you like the genre or not.
Enjoyable: When this rating is given it means that the series will not be disappointed with the series as long as you take a liking to its genre.
Average: Just like the rating describes the series is average. That means there is nothing special with regards to the content within the series. A series with this rating generally means that when you watch the series there is nothing really appealing or displeasing. Although watching a series that is average may be bearable you are probably better off watching something with a higher rating. However if you specifically enjoy the genre you may give it a try.
Not Recommended: A series that is not recommended means that when watching the series you may find it boring. Hence a not recommended series would be something you would not want to watch and even if you started viewing the series you would be inclined to stop. In other words its a waste of time.
(Predicted): You may have noticed the words Predicted is present next to some ratings. This simply means that the rating given is based on a low number of episodes generally from one to five. This means that because the series is still being released the rating given may likely change. Once the series is complete the “Predicted” tag will be removed along with adjustments to rating if required.
Note:
1) Serials are often compared to each other to help determine the rating. Although some are quite obvious especially the extreme ends (Must See and Not Recommended) when giving a rating it really depends on personal preference. Hence the rating given may vary in accuracy from person to person depending on genre preference.
2) When making comparisons live-action and anime serials are kept separate. This is because there is a much larger amount of anime out there compared to live-action content. Hence a live-action series will be given a more lenient rating.
3) Anime and live-action are obviously different and hence are rated differently with regards to content. Anime is rated according to the quality of the voice acting and animation quality.Though Live-action is also rated on appearance and sound it depends on the actors performance rather than a drawings quality. A live-action series may be given a high rating due to good acting as well as filming quality and special effects if necessary. However a anime series will be deemed very good when the quality of animation is good (eg. not having constant repeated frames to cut down on action scene costs), also there may be something unique about the animation such as the incorporation of 3D animation etc. Despite these differences when it comes to the quality of the story both these mediums are judged in the same way.
