Densha Otoko

densha otoko

Name: Densha Otoko (Train Man)
Genre: Romance
Year: 2005
Rating: Enjoyable

The Japanese movie Densha Otoko is rumoured to be based on a true story. However this isn’t just one of those movies that is simply labeled “based on a true story”. The entire story takes place on a Japanese bulletin board system called 2ch (I’m sure you otakus out there know what it is so I’m not going to bother to explain it.) There is a specific section where single men complain about being single. A English translation of the original posts can be found here. The story starts when a girl is saved from a drunk man on the train by what we known in the western world as a nerd. Following the events of the rescue the nerd later given the title of Densha Otoko (Train Man) falls in love with the girl he saved. Soon he starts dating this girl and you can probably guess the rest.

The movie isn’t the best thing I’ve seen. I would have rated this average as I found the movie quite boring however the fact that there was so much hype about the rumor as well as actual evidence it makes this thing kind of unique. I heard that the TV series is allot better but I haven’t managed to get my hands on it. If your looking for a heart wrenching emotional ride then your not gonna get it by watching this. I actually found this movie quite boring at some points but I guess since this is based on quite a unique event I had to see it anyway.

I haven’t seen the live action series either but I think this movie was decent. It could have been better but I guess a story like this takes time to develop.

The live action series is so much better than the movie. Try it and you’ll see =)

I agree with Kojak, the live action series was soooo funnnnnyyy. I remember just playing it in the background while doing my work haha, it’s the best xD. The actor in the live series may not be cute but hahaha you have to watch it! =]
