Name: Mahoromatic
Genre: Comedy, Science Fiction
Year: 2001
Rating: Must See

To protect earth from alien invaders the secret organization known as Vesper uses highly advanced androids. These extremely powerful combat androids are able to fight and defeat the invaders, however as a consequence the life span of these battle maidens are quite limited. Mahoro is known as Vesper’s strongest warrior android and is well known for her battle capabilities even amongst her own kind. However after countless battles it is inevitable that she too will soon cease to live. As a reward for her services she is granted the choice of spending her remaining time the way she pleases. By leaving the stressful world of combat she is able to prolong her existence for just over a year. Mahoro chooses to enjoy the time she has left as an ordinary human. She soon moves in with Suguru a junior high school student living in Tokyo. Though at first Suguru doesn’t realize any connection between him and his new found maid Mahoro, it is soon revealed that his father was actually a commanding officer in Vesper, the one who had responsibility over Mahoro when she served as a battle android.

Mahoromatic would be one of my favourite and first ecchi, comedy genre animes. When it comes to anime some serials just stand out. Mahoromatic is one of these, it would be considered a classic and one of the best in its own genre. Firstly the character designs are top of the range which is probably why Mahoro has been one of the most well known maid characters in the anime world. The main male character like in many other ecchi animes is a pervert and therefore allows for comedy to flow effortlessly as Mahoro has the total opposite opinion on “dirty thoughts.” Mahoromatic is kind of like Chobits except a lot less serious on the romance side. It’s very light hearted throughout the majority of the series so its good easy viewing. A very enjoyable series that shouldn’t be missed even if your not into this genre.

Agreed.

My no.1 favorite series without any reasons to explain, and I won’t argue with anyone why I like it the most. Maybe because of the balance between each elements (virtual, comics, drama, etc.), or because it’s the first anime I seriously watch after the childhood era of Doraemon? I don’t know, I just like mahoromatic.

Mmm. I was actually quite disappointed with this show, especially by its second season, but that might have had to do with two things: 1.) I was a huge Gainax fanboy at the time, in love with Evangelion, FLCL, and Karekano, and had come to expect great things from this studio. This one felt much more “typical” and in fact was the start of a general decline in quality in their work, which has only recovered with Gurren Lagann and the Eva remake. 2.) The show itself had a lot of promise, like with the timer of Mahoro’s deactivation at the end of every episode–a feature that got really underused, when they could have hung some real drama over it.

That said, the first season still offered a lot of ecchi laughs and was very enjoyable for about 3/4 of the time. I also loved the Eva references in the final episode of season 1.

It’s quite difficult to compare two animes with differing genres. Evangelion and FLCL are quite different to Mahoromatic. I understand what you mean by typical, but I find that if done well an overused theme can be the basis of great works. I don’t think it marks a decline in their work, many would believe Mahoromatic would be one of their best works along with eva and flcl. Though it may not be for everyone, nothing really is.

I’ll be honest, I overlooked Mahoromatic because it was atypical of Gainax. Having read this, I’ll hold my opinion until I actually watch. I do enjoy these type of series, so it should be interesting ^^

Mahoromatic was one of the firsts animes I’ve watch while it was still being aired in Japan. It was the beginning of my downloading of Fansubs. I really did enjoy Mahoromatic a lot, and also the second season too.

i loved it.. but kinda hated the ending. It was kinda too dynamic all of a sudden, which wasn’t what i was expecting for an ending.

(maybe spoiler)

it would be nice if his life as a bounty hunter was made… he looked soo different……..
