Last Exile is like Eureka 7 in the age of steam power. Actually it would be more accurate to say that the latter has similar traits as compared to Last Exile of which came first. I’m quite a fan of dystopian worlds, and I find that its quite common within anime to have the protagonists join a minority group in order to provide true justice. Much like in Gundam Seed the two Vanship pilots join a team fighting for peace and fairness in society. I was quite surprised to see that much of the scenes involving aerial battles were rendered in 3d. For its time, it was actually very well done. Though I gotta admit the design of the Vanships did remind me of those downhill home made racing karts. Though much of the time all you can see is cloud, Last Exile is an enjoyable series simply for its interesting concepts and overall plot.

If you liked Last Exile, you should check out Simoun. It’s a lot less yuri than you’d think from the cover art or first ep, and the story is quite good. Many have said it’s similar to Last Exile (which is on my to-watch list now).

Wikipedia has a plot summary for Simoun, but be warned it’s rather dry, long and complicated.

Man, I remember watching this shortly after it was out; one of my first marathons. I definitely think the mix of styles, concepts, and setting glued me in, especially with the Dio and the Guild aspect. Nice recommend.

Simoun of which I will review soon is like a yuri version of Last Exile. I actually quite enjoyed Simoun, especially because I found that the characters had very stereotypical personalities. There is the naive protagonist who actually has great hidden talent, the tsundere and yandere, they have everything.

I was wondering if I should ever watch this too, but with all the new anime airing in Spring (or in Australia, Autumn) I don’t think I’ll ever be able to.

I remember when this show first came out and G4 Tech TV aired it. Watching it brings back memories…One of the best animes I’ve ever seen and it is also one of my favorites!
