Kekkaishi

Name: Kekkaishi
Genre: Action, Family
Year: 2006
Rating: Enjoyable

Hundreds of years ago the feudal lord was attacked by demons who were seeking power. In order to protect the world from these monsters a talented man, Tokimori Hazama with the power to form barriers and destroy these demons was appointed to protect the land. However the feudal lord died as Hazama was unable to protect him due to sickness. The remains was buried and the land in which the feudal lord rests was named Karasumori. Now in the present the heirs of the Hazama clan carry on the responsibility of protecting Karasumori from invading demons seeking its power. In order to defeat these monsters a technique involving barriers is used and hence these protectors became known as Kekkaishi. Ayakashi (Demons) are drawn towards the land and when there they are granted immense power. However there are a far more serious foe that the Kekkaishi need to worry about. The story follows the lives of two high school students 14 year old Sumimura Yoshimori and Yukimura Tokine. A typical shounen genre series but with a nice concept.

This is one of those serials where a boy strives for strength in order to protect his loved ones. When it comes to deciding whether to watch this series or another similar one there is plently of competition out there. Take Kenichi for example, there is humor, nice animation, and overall is much more interesting to watch. However on the other hand this series does have its highlights one of which would be the cool semi transparent barriers which looks very impressive. Though not the best example of a shounen series its one that you may find enjoyable.

Kekkaishi is alright but there are alot better anime out there to be seen, though one thing thats good about this series is that when the barrier is created it does look cool.

Very funny anime along with entertaining romance, attracting storyline as the story goes on and most importantly, suitable for all ages.

The Kekkai concept is one I find refreshing, while it may not share the immense popularity other shounen animes achieved outside japan, I find it holding my interest much more than the plots of other shounen anime such as Bleach or Naruto right now. Its simple and clean, with no long and lame names for techniques, and the leading female isn’t annoying or for that matter, useless. The same shounen genre, but with little tweaks here and there to keep it different from the rest.

Um. A couple of things.

1. It’s Sumimura, not Sumikawa.

2. Are you naming them the Japanese way (surname before name) or the English way? Because Yoshimori’s is the Japanese way but Tokine’s is the English way.

And if you don’t like the anime, read the manga! It’s better than the anime and it’s up to chapter 174 on Onemanga.

My bad dunno what happened there, lol. Thanks for pointing out the spelling error. When it comes to naming I know the Japanese method is surname first then given name (as in many other asian countries) where as the western method prefers given name first then surname. When mentioning names I generally refer to the name the character is more known as, in other words when it comes to certain characters especially those who are on a higher social rank eg older brother, senpai etc I’d refer to their surname. When it comes to the main character they are generally referred to by their given name. The anime is quite good, as I mentioned the animation is quite nice and the barrier concept is quite cool. Thanks for pointing out the inconsistency with the naming, I fixed that too.
